PM Modi Concludes Historic Visit to Brunei, Heads to Singapore
Prime Minister Narendra Modi has concluded his significant visit to Brunei and is now en route to Singapore, marking the second leg of his two-nation tour. Modi described his visit to Brunei as "productive," emphasizing that it heralds a new era of strengthened ties between India and Brunei. He took to social media to thank the Bruneian people and government for their warm hospitality and affection throughout his stay.
In his post on X, Modi highlighted the importance of the visit: "My visit to Brunei Darussalam was productive. It ushers in a new era of even stronger India-Brunei ties. Our friendship will contribute to a better planet. I am grateful to the people and Government of Brunei for their hospitality and affection."
During his time in Brunei, Modi held crucial bilateral meetings with Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah at the Sultan’s official residence, Istana Nurul Iman. These discussions were aimed at reinforcing the bond between the two nations and aligning with India’s ‘Act East’ policy and vision for the Indo-Pacific region. Modi's agenda focused on advancing trade, commercial linkages, and people-to-people exchanges between India and Brunei.
This visit is particularly noteworthy as it is the first-ever bilateral trip by an Indian Prime Minister to Brunei, coinciding with the 40th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the two countries. Modi received a ceremonial welcome upon arrival and met with Crown Prince Haji Al-Muhtadee Billah, the Senior Minister in the Prime Minister’s Office of Brunei.
The Indian community in Brunei gave Modi a warm reception at his hotel, and he also visited the Omar Ali Saifuddien Mosque, a significant landmark in the region. Modi inaugurated the new Chancery of the Indian High Commission in Bandar Seri Begawan, which he praised as a symbol of the strong bilateral ties. He acknowledged the role of the Indian diaspora as a living bridge between India and Brunei, further solidifying the bilateral relationship.
The visit aimed to explore new areas of cooperation in various fields, including defence, trade and investment, energy, space technology, health, and cultural exchange. Modi’s trip to Brunei highlights the growing strategic partnership between India and Brunei, setting the stage for future collaborations and strengthened bilateral relations.
