Jaishankar Highlights Terrorism as a ‘Persistent Challenge,’ Stresses Resolution and Commitment
External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar addressed the issue of terrorism, describing it as a “persistent challenge” that demands strong resolution and commitment. Speaking at University College Dublin in Ireland on Friday, he referenced the Air India Kanishka bombing of 1985, noting that a plaque in Ahakista, Ireland, commemorates the 329 victims of the tragic incident.
During his speech on “India’s View of the World,” Jaishankar remarked, “As the foreign minister of a nation that has long suffered from terrorism, it is crucial to discuss counterterrorism while addressing conflicts. The plaque in Ahakista serves as a reminder that this is an ongoing challenge requiring firm determination.”
He also highlighted the impact of conflicts, describing them as violent and traumatic. He observed that media coverage often focuses on a few high-profile conflicts, despite around 60 active conflicts worldwide. While global attention remains fixated on wars, other pressing challenges—such as the aftermath of the pandemic, climate crises, and mounting debt burdens—often go unnoticed.
Referring to a UN report on development progress, Jaishankar noted that countries are significantly behind in achieving their sustainable development goals. He cited figures showing that in areas like health, electricity, literacy, and nutrition, only 17% of the progress expected by the end of the decade had been achieved in the first four years.
Reaffirming India's diplomatic approach, he stressed that differences should not be resolved on the battlefield. He emphasized the importance of dialogue and diplomacy, asserting that while each conflict has its complexities, discussions and negotiations remain vital for resolution.
Jaishankar also highlighted the similarities between India and Ireland, describing both as fiercely independent nations that have historically been cautious in international politics. He pointed out that both countries have consistently taken independent stances while engaging in global affairs, shaping their policies based on their national interests.
