One guest who was turning 60 and had put this trip on his bucket list says it didn't disappoint: with Captain Miguel and Wilbur on board, the day went perfectly, with seven sailfish and a big mahi-mahi. Miguel Contreras has fished these waters for years and holds first-place finishes in tournaments such as the Marina Pez Vela Dorado Derby, the Rockstar Pelagic and the Owner's Maverick; the crew speaks English and, according to the website, teaches technique as you fish, so it suits first-timers as well as seasoned anglers.
Trips leave Los Sueños Marina between 6 and 7 a.m. aboard the Straight Up, a 1972 31-foot Bertram Deep-V that carries up to six guests. You can pick nearshore or offshore, half or full day (half days aren't offered in peak season), with drinks, beer and snacks included and lunch on the full-day charters. The rate is per group, not per person, and a stay-and-fish package adds a resort condo. Everything departs from the Herradura bay.
Nearshore fishing off Los Sueños: roosterfish, snapper, mahi-mahi and sailfish. Aboard the Straight Up, a 1972 31-ft Bertram Deep-V that carries up to 6 guests, departing from Los Sueños Marina.
